Flashback Friday - Sandra Lee's Kwanzaa Cake

Oh LAWD!

This abomination is probably one of the funniest and scariest things I have ever seen.

There is no such think as a Kwanzaa cake. Earlier, she made a Hanukkah cake because she had converted to Judism for her ex-husband. Never mind that nothing in the cake was Kosher.

She's dating New York Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo. Is Mrs. Lee going start screwing up Italian food? I could see her taking a can of Spaghettios throwing some grated cheese on top and saying "Here's a lovely semi-homemade Eye-talian dinner!" Her "tablescape" would look like a trattoria on crack and God only knows what type of hideous cocktail she would make.

Some people watch her show as part of a drinking game. That number is not enough to explain why her shows/books are so popular. She not a cook or a chef. I don't get it, I really don't.

I have no idea which part of this "cake" is more offensive. What do Corn Nuts (WTF?!) have to do with Kwanzaa? How can using all store bought goods represent a celebration of the harvest? My mind is blown. This woman is making millions a year.

Yep, making millions and doesn't even write these "recipes" herself.

Jezebel.com wrote a POST about the woman behind this and other lovely treats.

Have a great weekend.

Tony Bourdain has some hysterical routines about his feud with her. She is scary.

And, yeah, so was the cake!

What the what?? lol...Perhaps S.L. should do some research on the cakes traditionally made during the holiday seasin in African American communities and homes and go from there..Perhaps she should research and find out what the 1st Kwanzaa celebrations had on the menu or attend a dinner and share the recipes of those in attendence and work from there...geesh....put that cake right next to the teepee's people put on their Thanksgiving tables instead of wigwams...

There are so many things wrong with this show I don't even know where to begin.

You didn't get the corn nuts? She did say HARVEST Kwanzaa cake. Harvest - corn - corn nuts, of course.

Did you see how she measured a spoon of cinnamon?? WTF.

It makes me sick.

Oh but she has already started in on the Italian food. She made some kind of lasagne with canned tomato soup and cottage cheese.

I can't stand her. I can't stand my fellow American cooks actually executing her recipes and calling it good!!!!!

I have no idea who this is! I can't watch videos from the office so it will have to wait until I get home but now I am just dying of curiousity. Oh well, I'm off to Google her. Have a great weekend.

OMG! That's horrific! I"ve actually never seen her before. So scary....

hahahahahaha!!! seriously. i've always thought this lady represented the fake suburbia america to a tee. clueless, fake, and doing things w/o a thought to anything external (society, environment, community, etc).
prob harsh i know...for just a cooking show. but really - horrible (for the body and environment and local economy) ALL store bought ingredients, ALL disposable containers...
and on and on. :)

How did the Food Network even allow this to air?

Did she just call the corn nuts "Acorns"?!?! And in what whacked out kitchen could chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla frosting, spiced apples, angel food cake, pumpkin seeds and CORN NUTS all have complimentary flavors?!?!

Horrific!

This must be the worst cake I have ever seen. It's just offensive because I have no desire to eat it or look at it. This chick said "acorns", this chic added canned apples, corned nuts (just the nastiest snack on earth) to a CAKE?! The candles were the last nail in this horrific mess. Then she had the nerve to eat it? Somebody needs a therapist and AA.

Oh. My. There are no words. And, as you said, she makes millions while we scrimp and scrape. So unfair.

jen - I'm with Tony. She's bananas.

simone - exactly. I don't think SL cares one bit about Kwanzaa.

sara - Yes, I noticed it. Yet she has a "cooking" show on the Food Network.

amber - tomato soup and cottage cheese? No words.

joanne - she is one of the most popular "cooks" in America. Seriously.

Elizabeth - I wonder what cocktail she made to go with the lovely cake. No, perhaps it better that I don't know.

erin - her ex was CEO or something of KB Homes, builders of many McMansions. I grew up an older suburb of NYC. Nobody I knew made crap like this. Many of our neighbors had gardens. Why is her show so popular now? I don't think it would have been 10-20 years ago. It is possible for busy person to cook meals that are fast and delicious. Her "meals" are unhealthy and never look appetizing.

rose in cali - because she is one of the most popular hosts on the channel. sigh.

m - I don't know!! Wouldn't all those flavors would overwhelm the cake?

flopeam - Ha. Those candles are massive.

valerie - I checked out one of her cookbook at Barnes & Noble when I lived in the States. Wrong on so many levels.

That woman represents so much that is wrong with North American television, cooking shows...I could go on but this is not a very large space and it isn't my blog, LOL!

I think she wanted a TV show and she just happened to be married to someone wealthy enough to buy her one.

Ironically (or maybe not, as the case may be) you can't find that recipe on Food Network's website. I believe the recipe went viral at some point, so if you need a laugh (or a cry) you can find it.

If she tries to "do" Italian or Italian-American food, she is setting herself up for a SNL parody....maybe she is a parody in disguise.

WTF? I have no words whatsoever.. I used to watch the Food Network and I do not recall her shows or her. How discouraging. A Stepford Wife gone wrong on national TV. only in America. seriously.

Is it snowing in Rome? Its been snowing here since Friday. Gotta love the winter..:D

My problems with this woman:

1. this is not cooking nor baking... it is assembly. The same talent goes in to making a pb&j.

2. that has got to be the ugliest cake I have ever seen. where the h*ll did she get those candles?

Too funny. But what can you expect from someone who uses apple cider in her lasagna.

I seriously can't stand to look at this woman. I used to change the channel when her show came one. She tries to be all cute with themes.. her table scape matching her food, matching her curtains in her kitchen and then a cocktail and the end OF EVERY SHOW!!! I seriously think she's drunk most of the time! (judging by the cake... she probably was)

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

winegrrl - it's very interesting the recipe is not on the FN site. Hmmm

oi - it did snow but didn't stick. I'm not sure when Sandra's show started airing. I think she might have two shows on FN now.

FA - I agree. That she has cookbooks cracks me up.

CCL - Apple Cinder?!! What. I can't even wrap my head around that.

sonia - I forgot about the matching curtains! ha

Sherry said...

WTH? I never liked her - I really hate when she talks about her tablescapes. She embarasses me.

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

sherry - I love to set a nice table. I don't get her tablescapes at all.

coco cooks said...

Yuck! And sadly that type person, medicore, always seems to rise to the top in life. Sigh. Dont even get me started.
She bolted from Le Cordon Bleu because it was too tough for her. She only wante to do tablescapes and make curatins.

Tanya said...

She didn't "cook" anything yet she has a cooking show. Interesting.

@flopeam you don't actually see her eating it, do you?

I think that was the funniest/scariest thing I've seen in a long while. Mmm, cinnamon, cocoa, apples, corn nuts, pumpkin seeds and fake-ass icing.

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

coco - I know and the situation is getting worse.

tanya - It's crazy. I have yet to see her "make" anything that looks remotely delicious.

This video grosses me out every time.
Those candles are classic though.
Can I say tacky? Makes me think I can buy the cake ready made at a dollar store clearance sale.

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

j. doe - that is what I don't understand. Not only does the cake sound gross, it's not even pretty!
