I’m so glad the election is only two weeks away.

I can’t take it anymore.

What’s up with McCain/Palin and Co. saying a vote for Obama/Biden is a vote for socialism? Didn’t Bush just sign a bailout costing 700 Billion dollars? AIG? Halliburton’s no bid contracts? The deficit skyrocketing? Now we have 1% of Americans controlling 21% of the wealth? Why is it bad that people making over 250k might have to pay a little more in taxes? Trickle down economics don’t work. I don’t understand all this socialism talk. So are they saying it’s okay to bail out huge financial companies who took bad risks (and paid their senior execs a ton of money) but not people who have no health care or crappy public schools? I’m confused.

What is Congresswoman Michele Bachman (R- Minnesota) smoking? She said the following on MSNBC:

"What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they are pro-America or anti-America," she said.

This sounds a little McCarthy-like to me. Oh I know, I should be quiet. Obviously as an expat I must be anti-American. I mean why else would I have left the GREATEST country ever! First of all, I doubt any member of Congress is “anti-America”. Second, what does her party want…people to ignore the major problems and only shop, play video games, and watch Fox News?

Also who gets to decide who is anti-American? Is this related to the belief that only small towns are pro-American? So that means everyone who lives in a town of over 15,000 is anti-American? How so? I lived in a small town of 12,000. It's nothing like Palin's. Her small town has 46 crystal meth labs and one of the highest high school dropout rates in the state. Why does she keep talking about small town values?

I thought in order for a democracy to function it’s citizens have to be involved. I don’t think it’s anti-American to ask what the heck happened during the last eight years.

Rush said Powell only endorsed Obama because of race. Did Rush hear Powell’s full statement? Does Rush only support McCain/Palin because they are white? I voted for Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Clinton, but not Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. I thought Powell laid his case out very well and I’m glad he said something about the anti Arab/Muslim rhetoric. It’s wrong and not very American.

You are so right about everything here. Oh and I live in a socialist country (yeah I've been told I'm not "worthy" of being American because I chose to live outside of the "best country ever")and while it has problems just like everyone else, there are almost no homeless, everyone has an education and everyone has healthcare. So it can't be that bad, can it?

lilacspecs - Wait someone really said that to you? Wow. America is not the only country on the planet. It has pros and cons like most other countries.

I just don't know how they can say with a straight face that the Democrats are socialists after the biggest bailout in our country's history. This crisis did not happen under Clinton. It was under Bush and the party of less government.

yes, the 2 weeks left couldn't happen quickly enough...ready for it all to be over :)

Absolutely on only two more weeks.

The things that are being said are beyond disgusting. I'm truly worried that the crap that's being stirred up by Palin and the "anti-American" McCarthyist in GOP clothing is going to cause massive damage when Obama gets in.

And he must get in. It's time for change on so many levels.

But the fact that McCain/Palin has made this about being "pro-America" has a lot more to say about our ever-present racism. I'm sick of the code words, I'm sick of the "Barack Hussein Obama" crap, I'm sick of Palin's absolute nonsense every time she opens her mouth.

This is a time for unity, not division.

Okay, off the soapbox now. Great post, btw...

I don't know why it surprises any of us anymore that we'd be called "anti-American" for not agreeing withe republicans. Remember when the war started? No one could say anything negative about Bush without hating on the troops. It was, and is disgusting.

I have just about HAD IT with Sarah Palin. F*CK her and the moose she rode in on. HOW DARE SHE question my patriotism because my parents didn't move to a small town when I was born (sorry, our town is small, but now like she means!). HOW DARE SHE say I'm less of an American because I live in Washington, DC!! Were the 3,000 people who DIED on 9/11 in NYC and DC NOT PRO-AMERICAN because they lived in big cities on the East Coast? DOES SHE KNOW HOW F*CKING INSULTING THAT IS? As you can see, she makes my f*cking blood boil when I hear that sh*t. "The real America" she says. WHERE THE F*CK is that, pray tell? I guess a "real" American wouldn't say pray tell.

WHATEVER. I can't wait until this election is over. I have heard some of the most racist, hateful, terrible things from people during this election. And I'm used to the rough stuff (oh, dems are commies, hate america, etc). But the racial stuff is hard to take. It's 2008, not 1968.

I so enjoy reading your blog. I found you on Afrobella.

Anywho I'm American and I've been watching this political process from South Korea for the past 14 months. It's wonderful to see first hand some of the international love for Obama. I mailed my ballot last week and I'm feeling so good about that. Many of the worlds sensible people are so ready for his presidency. The ridiculousness of the Republican party mindset is so in our faces in this election. I might ask if things could get any worse but I already know that we'll hear a few more McCain/Palin pearls of wisdom being its all over.

And Jen I too am sick over the code words. If I hear another Joe the Plumber, Joe Six-pack, Hockey Mom... Ugh!

Hoping all Americans abroad cast their votes!

I SO know what you mean! I'm so ready for it to be november 4th! and if there is a recount i may pull out all my hair!

The mere thought of Palin brings on a gag reflex! She has no idea what she's talking about half the time and her arguments are see-through.

I'm so sick of hearing them bring up Joe the Plumber to attack Obama's tax plan when Joe the effin' Plumber doesn't even pay HIS taxes....so typical!

I voted yesterday for Change! Hopefully the rest of America will do the same!

Soon, patience. I read this morning that most Americans are gettting turned bt McCains negative tactics. I was so proud of Coilin Powell stepping up and choosing Obama over his old friend McCain.

erin - I feel you.

jen - Rick Davis said they can't talk about issues or they'll lose so this is what we have to hear about. Again if McCain had picked Romney or someone credible he could have attacked Obama on experience. Picking Palin took away his biggest advantage against Obama. Not a good move.

cherrye - I remember that. It was crazy. There was nothing wrong with questioning why we were rushing to war so quickly. Iraq has been a disaster and we entered the war under faulty info. This war is costing us lives and 10 billion a month.

gibber - As someone who knows people who died in the Towers and saw first hand the impact the attacks had on my friends, my city and my country, I resent her ignorant comments. Regarding the racial stuff, I was reading a comment on Jezebel from a 22 year old. She said she was shocked and had no idea that stuff like this went on in America. Not sure where she grew up. This is just the tip of ice berg. Joe the plumber is going to freak the hell out when Latinos become the majority in about 20 years.

nic - thanks for stopping by. I really wonder what is going on with the Republican party. I don't think they can continue to win elections by only appealing to the far right just how Democrats lose when they only appeal to the far left.

eryn - I pray there is not another recount. I mailed in my absent ballot a few weeks ago.

glamah16 - I wish I could be in McCain's war room. Who thought this plan of attack would help him with swing voters. If the economy was booming... Maybe the whole "wedge" issues trick would work again. When people are suffering like this they want to hear about solutions.

The amount of insanity by the GOP is ridiculous. It has reached levels of absolute madness. However, as exhausting as it is, it needs to be exposed. All of it. People in this country need a wake up call and this is it.

I hadn't thought of McCarthy but you are so right-it's like if anyone has a different opinion, then it's "un-american." I'd love to know when working from a base of fear became the american standard, because that's what I see driving many people.

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

sdg1844 - again, I wonder if McCain/Palin need new pollsters? This "real american" line of attack is only working with the base. They need more than their base to win.

moi - campaigning based on fear is a very, very cynical way to run for office.

Awesome awesome post. So clearly written. I only wish I had an American passport so I could vote. Thank you for speaking out

Well when were the Republicans ever this transparent? They released a statement to the media telling everyone what they were going to do! It's beyond pathetic. And this election isn't about them anymore. It's about us and what we stand for and how many people will choose to be involved in participating in progress.

Piccola said...

I agree with everyone else. Did you know that people from other countries are actually calling in to radio stations here, urging Americans to vote for change because this election will affect the world??!! It's astounding really. All this anti-American crap makes my blood boil too. Isn't this the Palin that is associated with the Alaska Independence Party. How American is that????

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

petulia - grazie. I was trying so hard to ease up on the political posts. But this whole anti-american thing ticked me off.

faith - that is another thing I didn't understand. Rick Davis saying "This election is not about the issues.". What?!

piccola - yes she was for a while and her husband was in the party even longer. The party wants Alaska to secede from America. Another reason why I really dislike Palin is her hypocrisy. How can you send a positive video to a group like this then turn around and accuse anyone of being anti-american? Does she truly believe the words that come out of her mouth?

I agree with your first statement, I'm glad it's almost over. I'm so tired of hearing about both candidates who are both losers and idiots as far as I'm concerned. The US is stuck with a mediocre president and vice-president woever wins. I'm hoping that in 4 years a real presidential candidate will step up.
P.S. I think that Obama's statement about (the government)'spreading the wealth' is socialist and wrong. The government can't regulate aid to Katrina victims who are still suffering years later. I don't want them 'spreading MY wealth' (not that there is much anywy)

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

j. doe - I hope in four years we will be in a better place. We'll see. The next President will have a lot of problems to deal with.

I don't think McCain, Biden or Obama are idiots.

If the gov't is going to spend billions to help people, I'd rather see that money go to fix the nation's infrastructure and social programs than to corporations.

It's been a lot time since I've studied economics. I'm also not sure which countries are actually socialists. I do believe in smaller gov't but as a moderate. There are so things the gov't has to regulate or we will go back to the age of the Robber Barons if we are not there already.

I hope someday to make over 250k or seven figures. I still don't think people at that level of income should be paying less relatively in taxes than middle and working class people. A gov't for the rich by the rich is not going to work well for very long.

WineGrrl said...

IMO, people who throw the term "socialist" around like an insult usually have no idea what a real socialist believes....at ALL.

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

WineGrrl - exactly. That is why I feel like I need to read up on it more. Isn't most of Europe socialist? Canada?

They say the word like it's "commie" but the two are very different.
